Braces make teeth straighter, but they also create dozens of little ledges where food and plaque love to hide. Plaque left around brackets can leave white marks on the teeth once the braces come off. The right few tools make cleaning around them much faster, which matters a lot when the person brushing is a busy teenager.

1. An orthodontic toothbrush

Orthodontic brushes have a V-shaped bristle pattern: shorter bristles in the middle that sit over the brackets, and longer ones on the sides that reach the gumline and the tooth above and below. A soft regular brush works too, but the V shape makes it quicker.

2. Interdental brushes

These tiny bottle-brush tools slide under the wire and between brackets, where a toothbrush cannot reach. They are the single most useful tool for braces. Get a mixed pack of sizes, since the gaps vary.

3. Floss threaders or orthodontic floss

Regular floss cannot get past the wire. Floss threaders work like a needle to pull floss under the wire. Some floss comes with a stiff end built in, which is faster.

4. A water flosser (optional but helpful)

A water flosser sprays a thin jet of water around brackets and under the wire. It does not replace brushing, but many orthodontic patients find it makes the daily routine faster and more pleasant. A cordless model is easier to keep in a shared bathroom.

5. Orthodontic wax

When a bracket or wire rubs the inside of the cheek, a small piece of orthodontic wax covers the sharp spot. It is cheap and a must-have in the first weeks after braces go on or get adjusted.

The school-bag kit

A small travel case with a folding toothbrush, a few interdental brushes, and a piece of wax lets a teen clean up after lunch. Even a quick rinse with water after eating helps when brushing is not possible.

A simple daily routine

Brush after meals, holding the brush at an angle above and below the brackets. Use an interdental brush around each bracket once a day. Finish with floss or a water flosser at night. It sounds like a lot, but with the right tools it takes about five minutes.

Always follow your orthodontist's instructions, especially about which foods to avoid and when to use any special products they recommend.
